Goblet cells

Guardians of mucosal surfaces

Goblet cells are specialized secretory epithelial cells scattered throughout the respiratory and gastrointestinal tracts that produce and secrete mucus. Their characteristic goblet-shaped appearance results from mucin-filled secretory vesicles that distend the apical portion of the cell.
